If you mean the Three Branches of Government, then they are the

Legislative Branch

Executive Branch

Judicial Branch

The Legislative Branch creates laws and decides whether to approve, or deny them. If a President vetoes a bill, then they can un-veto it and allow everyone to re-vote on it.

The Executive Branch is another part of the process in making laws; he decides whether to pass the laws. The Legislative Branch only really suggests bills, which, if approved by everyone including the President, becomes a law. The President can also pardon a criminal.

The Judicial Branch determines whether or not the Laws passed by Congress are constitutional or not. The same goes for the Executive Branch.

The purpose of the Legislative Branch is to make laws.

The purpose of the Execitive Branch is to enforce the laws. so made.

The purpose of the Judicial Branch is to interpret the validity of such enacted laws and the enforcement thereof on the touchstone of the constitution of the country .

The essential duties of government (according to Adam Smith) are national defense, administration of justice (Law and Order), and the provision of certain public goods. The latter duty is often expended to mean providing "public works and public institutions that facilitated trade."

Government is needed because it is the institution through which the people are able to maintain order, provide public services, and enforce decisions that are binding on all members of society. Without a government, the basic rights of the people might not be protected. As the Declaration states, governments are instituted in order to protect the rights of all people, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Governments also protect the nation from foreign or domestic enemies. And the government protects the nation from attack from abroad or from within the nation's boundaries.
