After Magellan's expedition, King Charles I of Spain decided to launch several other expeditions to foreign lands. These included the Jofre de Loaisa Expedition to Urdaneta, the Alvaro de Saavedra Expedition, and the highly unsuccessful Ruy Lopez de Villalobos Expedition. The only successful expedition was the colonization of the Philippines by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi.

Cortes and Pizarro's expeditions were characterized by their military conquests of powerful indigenous empires such as the Aztec and Inca, respectively. Unlike other explorers who focused on exploration and trade, Cortes and Pizarro sought to conquer and colonize territories for Spain. Their expeditions led to the fall of these empires and the establishment of Spanish control in the region.
The first expedition in 1584 dissapeared, and it was assumed that they had been kidnapped or killed by the Native Americans living in the area. But other expeditions survived and Virginia was made a colony in 1607.
Expeditions began in the late 1800s to learn more about this remote part of the earth. Some have been well-documented, others not so much. Any group that 'goes to Antarctica' can be said to be on an expedition, because there is no commerce, lodging, or other commercial enterprise on the continent. The number is many, since there are now expeditioners who are paid by people to to take tours -- expeditions -- to the continent.
Cortes's success in conquering the Aztec Empire inspired other explorers to seek similar conquests and riches in the Americas. This led to an increase in expeditions and colonization efforts by Spain and other European powers.

Magellan "rediscovered" the Philippines. Magellan's main goal was to find the Spice Island, currently named Malaku Island. He accidentally "discovered" an island in Eastern Visayas, part of the Philippines, and was later killed in a neighboring island, Mactan. The significance of his expedition to find Spice Island was that he proved that the world is round.
Pizarro was the leader on a Spanish expedition to search for gold and other valuables to give Spain a financial advantage. He came to Mesoamerica by boat.
