The six Holy Days of Obligation for Catholics in the United States are:
1) The Immaculate Conception- December 8
2) Christmas Day- December 25
3) New Years Day- January 1
4) Ascension Thursday- 40 days after Easter
5) The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary- August 15
6) All Saints Day- November 1
On these days (in addition to all Sundays) a Catholic must attend Mass and abstain from all servile work and any activity unbecoming for a day consecrated to God. A Catholic is bound to these things under pain of mortal sin.

Catholic AnswerThe main Catholic Holy Days are called Solemnities, the most important of which are the Holy Days of Obligation, of which there are ten. Most countries, however, observe less than this number, in the United States, only six are considered Holy Days of Obligation, the Epiphany is usually transferred (in most dioceses) to the nearest Sunday, as well as the Ascension and Corpus Christi. The Obligation for All Saints is abrogated if it falls on a Saturday or a Monday, St. Joseph and Sts. Peter and Paul are not observed in the United States as of obligation (but as one priest I know says, they are Holy Days of Opportunity). Other countries have different obligations as approved by the Holy See.
