improvement from a retired Chicago Cop
Chicago has not used most ten codes for over 40 years.
They prefer plain English when possible.
Here are the 3 ten codes used by Chicago.
10-1, officer needs emergency immediate assistance. This is the one that has been called when you see squad cars driving like maniacs coming out of nowhere.
10-4, I am a 2 man car and understand your message or assignment
10-99, I am a one man car and understand your message or assignment
The other codes you hear, like 19-P (paul) are ways of saying what happened to an assignment.
19 is other type of job, P is other police service (so 19-P is a catch all)
You can find all the assignment codes on line at the city of Chicago web site under police department directives.
The Fed, since the mas confusion on radios during 9/11, have been urging departments to change to plain language but the tradition, born of need when radio transmissions needed to be very short and were hard to hear, of 10 & 11 codes still holds on.

It will vary from department to department. Even police radio 10 codes and signals are not standardized.
All 10 codes differ from each department. A few, like 10-4, are usually the same however.
depends on the department. Agency "ten codes" differ.
Try going to a Police Radio 10 Codes website.
10-14 means a citizen is holding a suspect.Added: Use CAUTION if relying on the above answer. The "10-codes" are NOT universal department to department, much less nationwide, and they could have other meanings.
KANSAS CITY, KANSAS POLICE DEPARTMENT CODES & SIGNALS:10-10 Out of svc. subject to call10-13 Alarms not in service10-15 Have prisoner in custody10-23 2Arrived on scene10-27 Request driver's license ck.10-28 Request registration check10-29 Check for loss10-30 Does not conform10-64 Call Your HomeThere are many more at LINKAdded: Although there are many agencies that continue to use '10-codes' they vary widely from department to department and area to area, and you can never be certain that a 10-code used by one department means the same thing in another. Many department are doing away with the common usage of 10-codes and using 'plain speech' to transmit the same information.
Police codes vary from state to state. You can ask your local Police Department for a copy of the 10 codes they use. It should be noted, however, that Police Department are, by recommendation of the Federal Communications Commission, staying away from using those codes as much as possible, with exception to codes they must use for their safety. In some states the term Code 4 may mean that that a suspect is in custody, while in other states such as Florida, a signal 4 is a code for traffic accident.
Most Police departments or agencies will use that same 10 or 11 codes nationwide. But some do use their own codes that are different from other departments, which could make it confusing or in some cases dangerous for other Officers from different departments. The code your refering to is the 10-50 code which could mean "car accident" or for example, "the suspect just 10-50'd into the brick wall on H street". The 10-50 code could also mean "under influence of drugs". So it really depends on what the local department uses, you could also do a search on Google or Yahoo for example, "list of police codes for Wisconsin state Police", or "list of police codes for the Green Bay Police department". Here is also a good link that list codes most widely used across the States. www.radiolabs.com/police-codes.html
world best police is Hong Kong police.
Radio Code 10-41 is "beginning a shift".Evidence code 1041 pertains to police informants and confidentiality. "Privilege of identity of informer".The informer has the right to remain anonymous - unless she/he wishes to have their identity made public.Added: Although there are many agencies that continue to use '10-codes' they vary widely from department to department and area to area, and you can never be certain that a 10-code in one department means the same thing in another. Many department are doing away with the common usage of 10-codes and using 'plain speech' to transmit the same information.
That would be impossible to tell without identifying the police department, dispatch unit, state, city, jurisidiction, whether or not it is sheriffs, police, constables, etc. Each police department is different.
