If a gene is found on the X chromosome ( and, less commomly on the Y chromosome), it is said to be a sex-linked trait. Because the gene controlling the trait is located on the sex chromosome, sex linkage is linked to the gender of the individual. Usually such genes are found on the X chromosome. The Y chromosome is thus missing such genes (See Diagram above.). The result is that females will have two copies of the sex-linked gene while males will only have one copy of this gene. If the gene is recessive, then males only need one such recessive gene to have a sex-linked trait rather than the customary two recessive genes for traits that are not sex-linked. This is why males exhibit some traits more frequently than females.

Sex linked traits are traits associated with a gene that is carried only by the male or female.

  • In humans, the gene for colorblindness is carried by the X-chromosome.

Sex-linked traits are caused by genes located on a sex chromosome.

In humans, sex is caused by one pair of chromosomes (the sex chromosomes). In females they are called X chromosomes, so females are XX. Males have one X chromosome and one Y chromosome, so males are XY.

The Y chromosome is shorter than the X chromosome so many genes on the X chromosome do not have a 'matching' gene on the Y chromosome. So a recessive allele carried on the X chromosome is more likely to be expressed in males, because they won't have another copy of that allele on the Y chromosome.

Females have two X chromosomes so a recessive allele on one may be 'hidden' by a dominant allele on the other, so sex-linked traits are much rarer in females since they would have to inherit two recessive alleles.

Examples of sex-linked traits in humans are colour-blindness, muscular dystrophy and haemophilia [note these are UK spellings!].

a sex linked trait is something that is on a specific sex chromosome, for instance hemophilia, whereas a sex influenced trait is something that is influenced by your gender, for instance, breast development

A sex-linked trait is one in which the genes governing the trait are found on one of the two sex chromosomes. Most sex-linked traits are linked to the X sex chromosome, such as red-green colorblindness and hemophilia.

What is sex link inheritance?

Sex-linked inheritance is things you(Or any other species) recieve from parents, diseases/disorders like being colorblind or having hemophillia are examples of a sex-linked trait. Males have XY and Females have XX, these traits can only occur on the X chromosomes meaning males have a much higer chance to recieve these effects.

Why do brothers and sisters have similar facial characteristics?

they have similar traits to due being the combination of the same gamete detonators(ma and pa) although meiosis is actually 2 stages of crossing similarities can be seen do to sex link dominance.

How does chlamydia affect hemorrhoids?

Chlamydia does not typically affect hemorrhoids. Infection with anal chlamydia, which can occur due to anal sex but also due to transfer of chlamydia bacteria from the vagina in women who do not have anal sex, could cause anal irritation.
