An unstructured decision would be at work in these examples:

  • On the way home from picking up her children, a mother goes through a fast-food drive through so she won't have to prepare and cook dinner.
  • A housekeeper throws out all papers and cardboard, without regard to what might be important.
  • A student throws together a 5-page book report without ever reading the book.

A structured decision is based on pre-planning and eventually contains some level of order:

  • At noon, a mother decides that she won't cook dinner that night but instead will buy fast food after picking up her children at the end of the day.
  • A housekeeper sorts and organizes papers and cardboard and throws out useless items, then files the needed items.
  • A student prepares to do a 5-page book report by reading the book, deciding what important theme the book held, writing his ideas about the book's theme, then writing several drafts of a book report before turning in his paper.

Structured or Programmed decisions are the ones where the organization has already faced such decisions. And the employees are used to solving such problems. For instance the hiring of new IT specialists in a firm.

The unstructured decisions are the non-programmed decisions that are happening for the first time. For instance, dealing with a labor strike in a factory.
