You have to use "Outlook connector", which is freely available at micrsoft web site to synchronize with hotmail unless you have a paid (a.k.a premium) account. If you do have a paid account its simple. Just put ur email adderss in the relevent field and outlook will take care of the rest. Or else use the following settings if you prefer to do it manually.
Note that this works only if you have a paid hotmail account. otherwise you'll have to download outlook connector from Microsoft and follow the instructions that come along with it.
Note: It is no longer required that you have a paid account for this to work, Microsoft has opened up their POP and SMTP servers for use by free Hotmail account holders. So for the same reason, Outlook Connector is no longer needed either, just set up your free Hotmail account info as stated above. If port 25 has been blocked in your network or by your ISP, you can set SMTP port to 587 with TLS or SSL Encryption depending on the client in use (this is particularly helpful with newer smart phones).

Hotmail does not offer access to its service via an email client, at least not in its free, basic use option. However, there is a 3rd party solution that will allow you to set up your Hotmail or MSN mail account in your email client (on your Mac, Windows computer, or iPhone) called IzyMail. Simply sign up for IzyMail (see link below); and follow the instructions provided to set up your mail application for Hotmail access. (NOTE: there are some premium services offered by IzyMail, but the basic use is free as of this writing, May 2008)
The Hotmail settings are not as cut-and-dried as many would expect. First, the background: Hotmail Settings
As other web based email services, Hotmail is using the HTTP protocol for connecting you to your mailbox. If you want to send and receive Hotmail emails using an email client software, then your software must support Hotmail HTTP access for your email account. Some email clients, such as Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook, offer builtin support for Hotmail accounts, so you only have to select HTTP when you are asked to select your email account type and select Hotmail as the HTTP Mail Service Provider. http://www.emailaddressmanager.com/tips/mail-settings.htmlFortunately, there is a workaround for Hotmail e-mail. You can have your regular hotmail account forward to your cell phone through the GetMail service: GetMail for Hotmail:http://www.e-eeasy.com/gmailforhotmail.aspxScreenshot: http://www.e-eeasy.com/Pics/GetMail.jpghttp://www.e-eeasy.com/Hotmail_To_Mobile.aspx
POP3 refers to the email settings needed by an email program (such as Outlook) to retrieve emails from the email server. POP3 settings include the address of the incoming and outgoing mail servers, user name and password, security settings and incoming and outgoing port numbers.

The only way to access hotmail with Thunderbird is to use some sort of gateway program to translate between POP and Hotmail's webmail. One such program is "Webmail Retriever" you can find it at: http://www.apocgraphy.com/WebmailRetrieverRed Hope that Helps! OPTION 2 Use WEBMAIL add-ons (they work just like with firefox) You will need two add-ons, "webmail" (main add-on) and "hotmail" (for hotmail, you can set up others for yahoo etc.) You can download add-ons from webmail.mozdev.org Follow the instructions from website (http://webmail.mozdev.org/setup.html) Be careful to install webmail add-on before the hotmail one!
