The roles of the professional nurse There are several and various roles a nurse has, however some of them often coincide. The nurse may act as a client advocate, while also caring, communicating, teaching or counseling, and acting as a change agent and leader. As a care provider, the role of the nurse has traditionally included those activities that preserve dignity of the individual and those often refer to as "mothering actions" in nursing. However, caring involves knowledge and sensitivity to what matters and what is important to clients. The chief goal of a nurse is to convey understanding about what is important and provide support. As Benner and Wrubel stated that "caring is central to effective nursing practice...Nursing can never be reduced to mere technique and scientific knowledge because humor, anger, tough love, administering medications, and even client teachings have different effects in a caring context than a noncaring one". Thus meaning, caring is central to most nursing interventions and an essential attribute of the expert nurse. A nurse as a communicator. Effective communication is an essential element of all helping professions including nursing. Communication shapes relationships between nurse and clients. It plays a role in every action the nurse undertakes. Another role is being a teacher. Teaching refers to activities by which the teacher helps the students to learn. It is an intercative process between a teacher and one or more learners in whuch specific learning objectives or desired behavior changes are achieved. Many factors have increased the need for health teachings by nurses. Today, there is a new emphasis on health promotion and health maintenance rather than on treatment alone; as a result, people desire and require more knowledge. Counseling is another role of a nurse. It is the process of helping clients to recognize and cope with stressful psychologic or social problems, to develop improved interpersonal relationships and to promote personal growth. In contrast to the psychotherapists, who counsels individuals with identified problems, the nurse counsels primarily healthy individuals with normal adjustment difficulties. There are other roles such as being a client advocate, meaning an advocate of clients' rights, protecting and ensuring that the need's of the clients are met. A change agent, meaning a person or group who initiates changes or assists other in making modifications in themselves or in the system. A leader, in which the nurse helps a client make decisions in establishing and achieving goals to improve that client's well-being.
