PS2 style plugs were used prior to USB style plugs.
The 160 GB is not a Model that was designed to play PS2 games. The PS3 models with 4 USB ports Play PS2 games. Models with 2 USB ports are not Backward Compatible.

What you really are asking is whether the PS2 game CD will work in the PS3. The only PS3 models that play PS2 games are those with 4 USB ports, Newer PS3 models with only 2 USB ports will not play PS2 games.

Only on the 80GB console with 4 USB ports as you can see in the PSN related link But there is no PS3 80gb with 4 USB ports so no you can only play PS2 games on a 60gb PS3 the only one with 4 USB ports and memory card reader
PS2 ports used to be used for mouse and keyboards. Now they have replaced them with USB due to the speed and power it provides. USB doesnt use any pins so leads can wear better. Also the Serial and parallel ports have been replaced by USB for the same reason.
