The beluga can swim forward, backwards and upside down. Being able to swim allows them to escape predations and is one of their many adaptations. Beluga whales deposit most of their body fat into a thick layer of blubber that lies just underneath the skin. Blubber accounts for more than 40% of a beluga whale's weight (Sergeant and Brodie, 1969). This blubber layer insulates the whale and streamlines the body. It also functions as an energy reserve. With no dorsal fin on the back of the beluga whale, it allows it to move more freely under floating ice.

Belugas live most of their lives in the Arctic. Therefore, they are specially adapted to live there. For example, like most Arctic whales, they do not have a dorsal fin. This helps them because their back doesn't get caught when they swim under the ice. Also, they are able to make a variety of noises, such as clicks, squeals, etc. This plays a role in socializing, but it is also a sort of radar. They can hear the echo and determine where the ice flow is above them. Amazingly, the lump on their head (called a melon) moves while they sing, and "points" the noise to "see" where they want to.
