The biggest advantage is that it can travel just as easy over any reasonably smooth surface. Land, water, mud, ice - doesn't matter. And they can be quite fast too.
Disadvantages are that they are noisy and use quite a lot of fuel, they need a fairly smooth surface to travel on. On land, it doesn't take much of an incline or a ditch or a wall/berm to stop them.
And they'll slide sideways just as easily as they'll slide forward, which isn't good for precision manouvering.
