an advantage is that it creates a multiple of copies at a time of the thingy you want it to. a disadvantage is that it takes up a lot of space, needs an electricity (electricity bill) and that even the smallest mark on the paper your copying can show on the end results.

A dot matrix printer is able to print on carbon copy sheets or forms which produce multiple copies using pressure otherwise.

The technology itself was suitable before the cost of printing dropped low enough that making 3 copies instead of one was cheaper than using carbon paper or triplicate forms.
