Advantages of Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) over STP (Shielded) is that it's cheaper.

Advantages over CAT3 which is untwisted is that the cable runs can be longer.

The twists help to cut down on crosstalk.

The Disadvantages to a twised pair cable (AKA A Cross Over Cable): * It will require direct p2p (peer to peer) connections , e.g. straight from one computer to another (Mostly Via Ethernet or Com) * It will be incompatiable if talking to more then 1 computer by going throught a switch or hub. Cross Over Cables should only be used when one computer needs to talk to another one right next to it, or if you are connecting to a router (via the console port) to configure it.

Shielded twisted pair wires are less susceptible to electrical interference caused by nearby equipment or wires and, in turn, are less likely to cause interference themselves. Because it is electrically "cleaner," shielded twisted pair wire can carry data at a faster speed. The disadvantage of shielded twisted pair wire is that it is physically larger and more expensive than twisted pair wire, and it is more difficult to connect to a terminating block.

Unshielded Twisted Pair, or UTP, cable can receive unwanted interference and data from other close network cables. This is the largest disadvantage to UTP. The other disadvantage is that the signal being carried on the cable can leak to other nearby cables.

Both of these conditions can be very detrimental to the network
