What are the advantages and disadvantages of super phosphates?

Advantages:

• It's a cheap source of phosphate (P) and sulphur (S),

Disadvantages:

• It has lower levels of P & S than a number of other products,
• It contains very little of any other valuable mineral, ie. nitrogen (N), potassium (K),
• It's quite bad for the environment. It contains a lot of water soluble P, a large portion of which can easily end up in ground water or local rivers, causing algal blooms and other nasty side effects.

Advantages of super phosphates include high phosphorus content for plant growth and quick availability to plants. Disadvantages may include potential runoff into waterways causing pollution and possible acidity issues in soils if overapplied.
