What is the value of Depression Glass green sherbet cups?

The value of any depression glass piece is dependent on the pattern it is. For example a Ballerina pattern sherbet is worth considerably more than an Ovide pattern. First, determine the pattern and then you will be able to ascertain the price value. A reference to Hazel Atlas depression glass can be found at the hazelatlasglass.com website.

What is A Depression Glass?

depression glass was made during the Great Depression of the 1930s and is a kind of cheaply manufactured pressed glass. Usually it is some kind of tableware such as drinking glasses, butter dishes, candle holders, salad bowls, plates, etc. A lot of it was given away as promotional items. Much depression glass contains Uranium and hence it is called "Uranium glass" (not very imaginative, I know) and it will glow under a black light (UV). Depression glass is very collectable.

Yes. It is the pottery you can’t eat from because it has a high content of lead. I wouldn’t put depression glass in the microwave though.

What is the difference between carnival glass and depression glass?

Carnival glass is iridescent and strictly speaking, true carnival glass was made around 1910 to early 1920s. It was originally viewed as cheap, eye-catching glass given away at fairs and carnivals, hence the name. It is quite collectible now. You will find blue, green and marigold orange tones, all with the characteristic iridescent finish. Carnival glass was pressed and had many patterns with different motifs. Most shapes were decorative pieces like bowls or vases and some beverage sets. Glass companies have made iridescent glass since then of course, and this later glass is sometimes called carnival. You can find glass from the 1970s and even later from companies like Indiana Glass or Fenton that are iridescent blue, purple, green, orange. Depression glass was mass produced in sets, usually meant for lunch or dinner, during the 1930s. It was usually but not always colored, usually transparent pink, amber, yellow, purple, blue, red, green or white. The patterns were pressed and could be made cheaply. Must depression glass was originally given away as premiums when one purchased something or the housewife could buy additional pieces by mail order. The white glass is translucent and not transparent. You will see colored glass that was made much later than the 1930s sometimes called depression glass. It really isn't true depression glass but has similar styles. So the main differences: time period, colors, iridescent vs. transparent (or translucent), the shapes, whether it was available in sets for table use, where it came from. You will find a lot of people use the terms carnival or depression to indicate a style and not to indicate an era.

How do you identify genuine depression glass from reproduction?

Typically reproduction depression glass has several tell-tale signs that it is not authentic. These are only generalizations, and should not be considered to be true in all cases. The color of reproduction depression glass is usually darker than the original. The weight of reproduction depression glass is usually heavier than the original. Patterns on reproduction depression glass are usually weaker than originals. There are a great many resources for determining whether your depression glass is original or reproduction, for instance the hazelatlasglass.com website covers all the glass made by Hazel Atlas.

What is the value of antique depression glass?

Depression glass was produced in the 1930's, so it isn't antique. An antique is over 100 years old. The value of each piece depends on how common or rare it is, and what condition it is in. If you search for your piece on Ebay and/or replacements.com, you can get some idea of what it is worth. Be prepared to be dissapointed, though. Depression glass was produced in mass quantities and often given away for free as a company promotion, so it really isn't worth much, unless you find a piece in a rare pattern or colour. You can often find plates at thrift stores or flea markets for as low as $3.00. It's also hard to tell if something is really Depression glass, or a later reproduction. Have fun collecting!
