==== people came forth onto the earth via a sipapu or hole in the ground near the Grand Canyon. ==== After analyzing the religious symbols found on rocks or pottery and the distribution of ceremonial structures, some archeologists now think that the Anasazi may have been influenced into leaving their homeland by the pull of a new religion. One possibility is the Kachina religion with its masks and dolls that still survive today. Unlike many of the secret organizations in the modern pueblos, the Kachina societies, in which spirits of dead ancestors acted as intermediaries to the gods, were open to everyone, so some archeologists think that this spirit of equality would have had an appeal to a civilization like the Anasazi's that was entering a dark age. Anthropologists studying 20th-century pueblos have found a mix of secret societies co-existing with the more recent Kachina religion. There are hunt societies, medicine societies and societies of sacred clowns. In addition, pueblos are often divided into two factions, called the summer and winter or the squash and turquoise people. Anthropologists are fairly sure that these new organizations were not imported by the Anasazi, but sprang up sometime after their arrival.

There is no way to know for sure what beliefs they had. Their direct descendants, the modern Pueblo peoples have a unbroken record of continuity of all physical culture with the Anasazi so it is reasonable to assume that their beliefs have something in common with the Anasazi. However, although their are mainklhy commonalities the Pueblo people are not one culture or language. For example Zuni and Hopi languages have nothing in common. Also, we can see changes in the way kivas and plazas were built and presumably used over time. It appears like this kachina religion arose in around the 13th century.

The Anasazi are a culture composed of numerous early Native American groups. They shared a common bond as early farmers and stone home builders. Their ruins are scattered among rock outcroppings and, later, in village plaza communities. Their disappearance is a mystery but the Anasazi are assumed to be ancestors of modern day Pueblo Indian tribes (about twenty).

Their beliefs are polytheistic, meaning they seemed to have a spiritual reference for everything - clouds, rain, crops, animals and more. Their society is matriarchal everything belongs to the ladies and is passed through their lineage. The spiritual society seems to be male dominated, with men portraying both male and female figures. It is from on this that the Kachina evolved. Much of the spiritual life is conveyed in a public manner, dances and ceremonies but some remains secret. Visitors are welcome, decorum expected.

Hopi Indians, in particular, are quick to share their beliefs with all peoples - the more that believe, the more powerful the spiritual medicine. Other Pueblo tribes are more private as a result of pioneer Spanish, Mexican and American intrusions. Join in!

Did the anasazi practice human sacrifice daily?

There is much debate about this, but it is often hypothesized that cannibalism was brought from Mexico into the Anasazi territory, perhaps by religious cultists. Cannibalism was common in Mesoamerica, and some archaeologists believe that the Anasazi practiced ritual cannibalism and sacrificed their victims in a type of religious ceremony.
