You hire a Freelance Graphic Designer to take care of your needs. Hiring a freelance designer compared to an in house designer is way more advantageous because graphic design is (for smaller companies) an "At Need" service. Unless you are a graphic design firm, I feel that it's best to hire a freelancer from time to time to save money, but still get great results.

You may have a great idea, product, service or company that you want to launch into the public. You may need to gain a publicity edge against local competitors, or just continue ruling your market. As a business owner, you may be frustrated with the competition of other businesses that have spent thousands upon thousands of dollars through huge graphic design firms to achieve a great look and professional public image. Now where do you go for your new website, logo, business cards, and where can you find a quality, inspired and affordable solution that stands apart from the competition?

At Barton Designs we aim to provide a customer service driven and professional freelance design experience.

Do you have to work for yourself as a graphic designer or can you work for someone?

You can work for someone else, such as for newspapers and magazine publishers, a graphic design & advertising agency, or an in-house agency - an agency that is actually located within a company and is used primarily for that company's needs. Or you could be a freelance graphic designer. This is a designer who basically works for himself without the backing of an agency. You would work from home and would probably have a large variety of clients. You may do all of the work yourself, but you could also ask an acquaintance to partake in the project with you who might have specific abilities - such as a copy editor.

Does a graphic designer use math?

Yes, because they will need to know which part of which house needs to go where and how on graph paper. Hope this helps!:)

Will you need to be licensed to be a graphic designer?

Technically, no. There isn't a graphic design license like there is, say, a medical license. However, you will have a really hard time getting a job without a degree, whether it is an Associate's degree or a B.A., unless you are incredibly creative and awesome. You need to learn the things that are taught in classes at college for graphic design to understand the business and technical aspects better, rather than just the creative aspect of graphic design. Anybody can be creative. Of course, having a B.A. may look better than having an Associate's degree. A lot of training will also occur on the job. Lots of agencies and in-house agencies will spend quite a bit of time training new employees, not necessarily on how to design, but how to do things the way they are done at that particular agency. It also helps a lot if you are Adobe certified. Adobe offers training specific to their products and you can take individual classes on a single product or a combination. You will have to study, demonstrate your knowledge, and complete an exam in order to be certified. It's not necessary but it certainly looks good on a resume. You could always just be a freelance graphic designer. It is sometimes more difficult to get your name out there without a prestigious agency (or a company of an in-house agency) backing you. Doing freelance doesn't require any certification, but like was mentioned before, it will be a lot more difficult for you without the educational background. Have worked as a Graphic Designer for 20 years both in Europe and the USA and have never heard of anybody needing a license to work as a Graphic Designer. To get specific jobs you might need to have certain degrees or diplomas both there is no licensing involved.

Should you choose a private designer or one on a freelance site?

There are pros and cons in hiring in-house staff vs independent contractors. If you choose to work with a private designer, you can have specialized expertise within reach where it is easy for you to manage the work. Freelance designers have multiple clients and they may not be that hands-on. If you will hire freelancers to do the work, you can save on the cost of having to pay for employee benefits and other overhead costs of hiring an office employee.

Exploring The Various Types Of Graphic Designer Jobs?

In most instances, graphic designer jobs involve arranging graphical elements, such as shapes, text, colors, or even photographs, into a specific composition that relays meaning, carries a narrative, or that represents a specific concept or brand. The type of work that a graphic designer performs is distinctly different than an illustrator, photographer, or other types of visual artists since the graphics are usually geared towards reproduction, and are frequently composites of many premade elements as opposed to original painterly images. Modern graphic designers can work both in traditional mediums on paper, or can produce digital images that can be used online. Graphic designer jobs involve a wide range of different tasks. A common job is creating or enhancing logo designs for a company. Another type of project is composing brochures, pamphlets, books, or other types of layouts for printed media. Digital designs such as website layouts, advertising banners, icons for applications, and even interactive graphical user interfaces (GUIs) are also all areas covered by a graphic designer. Finally, a graphic designer can create an entire scheme of colors, designs, and shapes that can define the brand of a company or product, sometimes even crossing over into the realm of industrial packaging design. Without previous experience, most graphic designer jobs require some type of degree either in graphic design or visual communications. In certain locations, there are local unions or guilds that must be joined in order to work within certain graphic design jobs. Without educational credentials, then employers tend to look for successful previous experience where a project was completed, and the results used in the real world. Regardless of experience or education, most graphic design jobs usually request samples or a portfolio to ensure that the designer's style is appropriate for the position or project. The salary for graphic designer jobs can vary greatly. Many designers work on a per-project basis, even if each project is consistently for the same company, and can earn an average wage depending on the size and length of the projects. A purely freelance graphic designer will have their income fluctuate with the availability of work. Large corporations, media companies, Internet companies, catalogs, and manufacturers hire graphic designers to work fairly standard hours in-house, in which case the designers tend to make slightly above average wages that can increase over time.

Graphic designer jobs?

Graphic designers design the visuals and typography for advertisements, posters, web sites and point-of-purchase materials such as restaurant menus. Some call their work "visual communications," since graphic designers convey messages visually, rather than through words. Some graphic designers who work for advertising agencies create commercials through drawing storyboards. Designers are also employed with independent graphic design studios, computer software manufacturers, printers, publishers, newspapers or large companies with in-house art departments. In addition to working directly for a company, graphic designers can choose to do freelance work for clients, either as their primary job or in a moonlighting capacity. A graphic designer can advance to become an art director who creates the concepts and oversees a small group of staff designers. In advertising agencies, an art director can advance to the level of creative director, who comes up with both art and copywriting concepts. The most important keys to getting a job in graphic design are the quality of the applicant's portfolio, work experience and technical expertise. A college degree helps, but a four-year degree is not always required. Applicants who are sure they want to go into graphic design can choose a focused program that teaches only graphic design. Any graphic design coursework must include instruction in computer graphics since doing layout and design manually is no longer done. A good way to choose a program is to talk to art directors in the field and ask them which programs have the best reputation. Graphic design is an intensely competitive field, and internships help applicants gain necessary work experience. In addition to internships, smart students seek freelance assignments that will boost their portfolio. Portfolios made up of work for actual clients are much more professional than assignments created for school projects. The average salary for graphic designers is $43,500. The average starting salary is $26,200. Art directors make more money than graphic designers, and creative directors typically make over twice the salary of a staff designer. Freelance graphic designers can typically charge more per hour than the average staff artist, but they must also purchase their own health insurance.
