Obviously the first is job security ..... a Justice (as they are properly called) may serve for life if he so desires. A very nice salary and benefits package is another. You don't have to worry about losing your spot just because the other party is now in control. You surely never have to worry about finding a parking space. You have the distinction of being one of a very select group. There's always the chance, too, that your name - for better or worse - may end up in the history books. There are probably others, but people like us will never know.
The benefit of lifetime appointments to the US Supreme Court is that the members of that court are fully independent, since they do not need to be re-appointed or re-elected, and they can therefore be completely honest in their judicial decisions, regardless of who may disagree with them.
