The flood plains create lots of water and also suitable conditions for soil which is used for agricultural and also waterways are useful and important for transportation. It provides food for people. The Mississippi River has played a very important role for many Native Americans who lived up in the Upper Mississippi Valley (Santee Dakota etc)
