The best diet for a ferret is a raw meat diet; it most closely mimics their natural diet. They are obligate carnivores and can only digest meat.
Although raw is best, for some people it is not feasible. Choosing a good kibble diet can be challenging but finding a good one is essential to your ferrets health.
First you need to look at the guaranteed analysis. A good kibble should be at least 35% protein, 20% fat and have less than 3% fiber.
Next, look at the ingredient list. By law, ingredients have to be listed in the order of weight, so we want to see a lot of meat near the top. I try to choose kibble that has a least 4 meat ingredients in the first 6. Beware of items like "poultry" or "fish" versus "chicken" and "salmon". These are unspecified sources so that poultry could be chicken, turkey, duck, who knows! This means the meat source could vary from bag to bag.
I prefer to see whole meats like "chicken" or "turkey" as the first ingredient, followed by "chicken meal" "turkey meal" or "duck meal". I don't mind seeing by-products as an ingredient because this can mean yummy items like liver and organs, all items a ferret would eat in the wild. I just don't want to see by products making up a majority of the foods.
Some high end cat foods can be fed, given that they meet the criteria above.
Good ferret foods: Wysong Epigen Ferret 90, Evo ferret, Natural Gold, 8in1 Ultimate Crunchy, DrFoster and Smith Ferret.
Good cat foods: Evo cat, Wellness Core, Natures Variety Instinct, Orijen, GO! fit and free, and Blue Wilderness kitten.
Dog food should not be fed; it usually does not have to proper fat/protein ratios and is often higher in fillers. It also does not contain taurine, an essential nutrient for cats and ferrets.
No! Absolutely not. Ferrets are strictly canivores which means their digestive system is built primarily for meat based foods. A ferret cannot digest carbohydrates it could lead to intestinal blockage and death. I highly recommend to feed your ferret, ferret specific based foods to meet their high protein dietary needs. Never feed your ferret human foods, as much as you want to give them a "Treat" for being cute, good, or just because...fight the urge to do so.
One of the best ways to keep a ferret healthy is to learn and feed a proper diet. Other ways is to learn and provide ways of enhancing their behavoirs.
You can feed them frozen fish foods, Oscar pellets, and flakes. IT is best you feed them a variety of foods rather than just one.
no fruit doesn't kill a ferret the only think not to feed a ferret is meat any type of meat
Depends on numerous factors - the size of the ferret, the kind of bird your are feeding your ferret, etc
no
In a newborn ferret is wanting to eat you should blend his food so it will calm down and get the mother [ if you still have it] to breast feed it alot :]
Feed your ferret it's regular meal in the morning. When hunting take some treats and plenty of water for your ferret.
Yes........ But it will die
Yes ferrets are carnivores. They eat raw meat, fish and eggs. You can also feed your pet ferret special ferret food. Ferrets cannot digest foods such as fruits and vegetables and feeding it to them may cause stomach problems or block the ferrets intestines.
If your ferret will eat chicken, as a treat it is acceptableAs a treat, ferrets can have small amounts of chicken
You should only feed very high quality cat food (or ferret food!) to your ferret. Both animals are obligate carnivores and derive all necessary nutrients from meat. Food should be at least 35% protein, 20% fat and have less than 3% fiber. At least 4 of the first 6 ingredients should be meat. Good ferret foods: 8in1 Ultimate Crunchy, Zupreem Premium, Evo Ferret, Wysong Ferret Epigen 90, Natural Gold. Good cat foods: Evo cat, Wellness Core, Orijen, Go! Fit and Free, Natures Variety Instinct, and Blue Wilderness Kitten. I used the More Dooks food chart for reference.
