When do you get the jobs in Final Fantasy 1?

The crystals found during the normal story mode unlocks jobs. From there go the the job menu from the overall menu page and select the person to change. From there select the desired jobs. Most jobs under job lvl 90 take from 2-6 battles for the characters to get accustomed to.

Stick with your party of Freelancers for now and proceed through the game up to the point where you fight a "Djinn". After that you will get the ability to change jobs. Select "Job" from your main menu and then the character whose job you would like to change, then voila!

First, you must defeat the Djinn. After you have do that, you go to the crystal and it talks to you and the other three. When you leave, a moogle will tell you that you can now change jobs. Then, you can go to your menu, select jobs, select the character, and select the job you would like them to have. But, you can only start out with six jobs for each character.

For a bonus, when you leave the cave, go to Sasune's Castle, then go to Kazus city, speak to Cid, speak to Refia's father, and take Cid back home. You're welcome.

You don't. Job classes are only CONSIDERED to have upgrades. You just have to unlock the set of jobs from the next, or last crystal, such as the black mage's (wind crystal job) upgrade is considered to be the Magus, which is an earth crystal job (the very last crystal). Others are sooner such as the Evoker (water crystal (3rd)) is considered to be upgraded to the Summoner (earth crystal (4th))

Once the Castle of Ordeals has been completed, take the Rat Tail to Bahamut on the Cardia Islands. Upon receiving the tail he will grant your characters upgraded job titles which will increase their abilities, allow new equipment to be used, and new spells to be learned.
