Loosen the upper and lower alternator mounting bolts. Turn the adjustment bolt on the lower left-hand side of the alternator. You should only be able to bend the belt 90 degrees at its longest run, in the middle. When done adjusting, tighten the upper and lower alternator mounting bolts.
Remove the bolt on the lower front side and two more bolts on the rear of the alternator. Make sure all nuts are off the bolts. Do not loosen the bolts that hold the alternator together. Remove the belt. Now slide the alternator off the mounting bolts. Slide the new alternator onto the two seating bolts, then hand-tighten them. It's two bolts. There is a top alternator bolt and an lower adjustment bolt. Loosen both bolts enough to slip off the alternator belt. Remove the bolts, and then slide the alternator down and under the car through the passengerside wheel well. Installation is the reverse of above.

First you have to disconnect the power from the battery. Then you remove the belt,and all electrical connections. Then you take out the bolts holding it on the brackets and bring it out from under the car. - Disconnect Battery - Remove Air filter intake components. - Remove fuel hose to carb (maybe) - Remove 12mm upper alternator mount bolt - Dissconnect 10mm Alternator positive connection. - Dissconnect Alternator connector plug. - Remove 2*12mm lower alternator mount bolts. - Remove 2*10mm lower alternator shield bolts. - Remove 2*14mm exhaust pipe to manifold bolts. -Wiggle the old alternator out and the new in...trust, it works IF YOU INTENDED TO REPLACE THE ALTERNATOR BELT... - Slacken the underside 10mm main belt tension pulley to allow alternator belt R&R.

Piece of Cake!! remove serpentine belt (search here for answer how to), remove the lower of 2 bolts from the alternator, loosen the upper, rotate the alternator up, remove the bolt. Install is the reverse.

V6 4Runner has a 14mm bolt on the top of the alternator and a 12mm bolt on the bottom of the alternator. Loosen both of these bolts. Look through the drivers side wheel well and you will see another 12mm bolt below the alternator. This is your tension adjustment bolt. Tighten or loosen as needed. After proper tension is achieved tighten the upper and lower alternator mounting bolts you loosened earlier.
