Usually because the area can stay moist from perspiration and is warm with just the right environment for bacteria to grow. Usually body odors are due to odors from bacteria or yeasts that produce the smells. This area produces and holds in perspiration so it can not dry quickly and germs grow. The perspiratory process also is part of the excretory waste system in the human body, so some toxins or chemicals or oils from foods eaten, etc. can be released to the outside of your body in the perspiration, which can cause odors, as well.

In addition, what smells bad to you may not smell bad to others, for your own physiological reasons and sense of smell but also because it is a known sociological difference between cultures. In some cultures, the body odor of perspiration is even considered a "turn on". A person's diet also can affect their body odor. Cultures with different foods eaten most of the time than you eat can have strong associated body odors that are what is, to them, normal. Garlic, for example, when eaten regularly and in large amounts, as in some international diets, can produce very strong odors not just emanating from the mouth and from the breath, but also from the pores in the skin. This is so normal in that culture and diet that the odor is not even noticed by them, it is just what they think all people smell like. They sometimes think in foreign countries that Americans, with all the preparations, scented hygiene products and cologne, etc. that we wear, are much more offensive smelling and stinky than the people in their culture who do not use these types of products.

Armpit odour, or axillary malodor, usually begins when you reach puberty, when your glands start working. There are two kinds of sweat glands in the human body, the apocrine glands, which secrete a milky fluid from the hair follicles, and the eccrine glands, which are the source of most perspiration. The sweat from the eccrine glands is water, which is used to cool the body by evaporation and to moisten the friction surfaces of the body.

Most axillary, or armpit, sweat is odourless, and comes from the eccrine glands. The small amount of apocrine secretion in the sweat, however, causes the problem.

Although fresh apocrine sweat is also odourless, it develops its characteristic smell when the sweat is broken down by the hair and skin cells in the armpit, and then eaten by bacteria.

It's actually the bacteria that make the smell, releasing a chemical called 3-methyl-2-hexenoic acid.
Antiperspirants act like a second skin under your armpit, preventing perspiration from being released. Without the sweat, the bacteria can't grow. Some people don't like the crusty feel that these leave on the skin.

Modern mans sense of smell has changed over time. Our natural body odors are there to help us attract members of the opposite sex (pheromones). Most people, especially westerners do not like the smell of sweat, but many (male and female) would admit that hot, sweaty lovemaking is 'extra' exciting and they are not sure why.

What causes a child to have odor under one arm?

Body odor from the armpits is formed from the bacteria living in the moist, mostly dark area under the arm. It is not at all unusual to have a disparity in the amount or character of the odor from left side to right. In early puberty, it happens sometimes that one armpit is stinkier than the other. As the child grows older, some of the bacteria are transferred from one arm to the other through wash cloths or use of deodorant.
