During his invasion of Russia, Napoleon lead his troops through the heavy snow. Not only this, but along the way he faced constant ambushes from the Russians. When he finally reached Moscow his troops were cold, feverish, and tired. They were not suited for this weather. Upon entering Moscow, the Russians set fire to their beloved city to force Napoleon out. He was forced to retreat back to France. However, at this time several of the German nations conspired against him and as he made his way through Prussia and Germany he was bombarded by their forces. He did successfully reach France but his Grand Armee was severely damaged.
He won or at least drew all the battles he fought in Russia. His army suffered heavily from supply problems and the cold.
He thought if he captured Moscow then the Russians would negotiate. Instead the Russians burned Moscow so Napoleon didn't have any anywhere to station his troops through winter. He lost horses in the summer due to the heat and he was losing horses in the winter due to the cold. This made transporting supplies more difficult.
Seeing that his supply line was too long he retreated. He went back the same way he had advanced which had already been pillaged by his army on the way in. There was little or no food for his army to take from the surroundings. Weakened from starvation, the cold, disease and lice, having little or no shelter etc many died. Stragglers were killed by partisans. Others deserted.
M.L.T.horse!
For the same reason Hitler lost when he invaded Russia. General Winter made it very difficult to maintain movement and supply lines across the vast expanses of the Russian countryside. In a nut shell, it was cold.
The major cause of Napoleon's defeat in Russia was the bitter Russian winter. The Russian army knew they could not defeat Napoleon's army in the battlefield so they retreated into the heart of Russia. Napoleon foolishly pushed into moscow despite the shortage of food and harsh cold, and by the time they reached moscow he had lost most of his men to the weather. Napoleon went into Russia with 500,000 men and came back with 40,000.
Napoleon was craved for power and attacked multiple countries at the same time! When Napoleon wanted to invade Britain, he was soundly defeated by the Royal Navy on several occasions, such as the Battle of Trafalgar.
Conditions were too cold and harsh for his troops.
His Grand Army suffered a humiliating defeat. It was not decimated, it was crushed.
