The problems faced by early settlers to New Zealand were largely the same as settlers to other European colonies throughout the world at this time. Many of the early settlers were fleeing the unemployment and resulting poverty associated with the Industrial Revolution in Europe and so were lacking in the resources needed to start their new life. Settlers could be faced with hostility from the local natives. They became victims of unscrupulous land dealers. They may have faced hostility from fellow settlers, as in the case of the Chinese in New Zealand. When they arrived they found little in the way of local infrastructure waiting for them; things such as accommodation and transport were often, on arrival, found to be poor or nonexistant.
The plural for hostility is hostilities.
