Mechanical weathering can be caused by wind, precipitation (rain, hail, etc), animals walking over it, basically anything that is a physical abrasion of the rock, not a chemical reaction.

Mechanical (physical) weathering is the breakdown of rock into smaller particles due to such factors as freezing and thawing, release of pressure, water absorption, salt crystal formation, landmass uplift, expansion and contraction from the sun or fire, plant root growth, actions of animals, abrasion, or other means that do not directly affect the rock's chemistry.

Natural mechanical Weatering is caused by forces such as moving water i.e. rivers, streams or the ocean or wind weathering.

Ice can also be a cause of weathring for it can cause much erosion when a glacier slides over a piece of earth, but water can also apply a lot of pressure when it freezes and expands in cracks.

Explain the difference between mechanical and chemical weathering?

In chemical weathering, there is a chemical reaction that causes weathering. Mechanical weathering is caused by fire, abrasions of water along a surface, animals, or freezing and thawing.

Water causes what type of weathering?

Water causes mechanical and chemical weathering.

What mechanical weathering causes rock to flake off in layers?

Chemical.

What is the natural process that causes rock to breakdown?

Weathering from mechanical and chemical means is the process that causes rocks to become smaller and smaller; wind, rain, the sun, the freeze/thaw cycle, moving glaciers, chemical reactions, and gravity are some of the causes of weathering.

Weathering by abrasion is usually caused by?

Wind-blown sand causes Mechanical Weathering of rocks by abrasion

How many main causes cause mechanical weathering?

4 main causes cause mechanical weathering!

What is mechanical wearthering?

Mechanical weathering is the process of weathering that causes disintegration in rocks but does not change the chemical compound of the rocks. Things like frost, rivers, and tree roots cause mechanical weathering. A large example of this would be the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

What type of weathering causes acid rain?

carbonation is an example of chemical weathering carbonation is an example of chemical weathering

What type of weathering causes exfoliation?

Mechanical weathering.

How does climate effect mechanical weathering?

Mechanical weathering refers to weathering that causes physical erosion of exposed rock without changing its chemical composition. Climate helps promote or prevent things like frost and wind that create this form of weathering.

What is one difference between chemical and mechanical weathering?

Chemical weathering is the breaking down of a rock on a minute level, like the solution of minerals. Mechanical weathering is the breaking down of a rock, sometimes causing a crack through an entire strata, resulting in mass movement; but mostly mechanical weathering is as a result of a factor which causes the rock to physically separate.
