Religions in themselves are not violent. Religions preach JUSTICE. Violence is the result of INJUSTICE. When a King, Queen, Emperor, Dictator misleads his/her subjects and does acts of injustice to other people/nations, they retaliate-the result is violence. When an individual commits acts of injustice to others, violence is the result. The last holy Prophet is reported to have said that One hour in the execution of justice is worth seventy years of prayers, Or he said something like this. This has been quoted by famous philosopher Ruskin in the beginning of his lecture on Justice. It is we who lose temper and cut the throats of others or invade other nations and subject the weaker nations to cruelty, oppression and slavery.
There are two principal causes of religious violence. One is a firm conviction that only one's own religion is true and that all other beliefs must be put down by persecution. Another is the belief, warranted or otherwise, that followers of another religion have caused harm to one's own religion, by persecution, desecration of sacred objects or even merely by some form of blasphemy.
For many centuries, religious violence has been the most pervasive, cruel and unjustified form of violence in the world.
Religious beliefs by a long shot. More people have died in the name of God worldwide than anything else.
