Bipolar people are just like everyone else. Bipolar disorder causes uncontrollable mood swings, from depression to mania. The only way to control them is by medication. The bipolar person may be depressed and sad one week, and feel on top of the world the next week - although most bipolars "swing" over a period of months instead of weeks.

They are two people in one. Each "person" takes a turn, say Manic, and Depressive. Ones turn can be anywhere from a few days or weeks or 6 months to a year, and they don't have to be equal in their sharing. Misunderstood most often is manic. Clues can be high levels of energy, not sleeping much, creative bursts that can lead to project after project, some finished, some not. Impulsive, spending money too much, giddy, impatient, a more intense version of themselves. Can lead to manic-pychosis and hospitalization. When depressive takes its turn, you're left with what you thought were beautiful creations in the making and only seeing the work they will take, even to tear them down. Isolate, insomnia but always exhausted, stop socializing or going out, or even doing hobbies that you do alone anyway. Don't answer the phone, as little general hygiene as possible. Suicidal thoughts may follow the extreme guilt and shame you feel of your condition, and hopefully, hospitalization occurs before a suicide.
