A cyclonic storm is characterized by having a low pressure center and rotating counterclockwise if it is in the northern hemisphere and clockwise if in the Southern Hemisphere. Such storms can bring rain, thunderstorms, and sometimes strong wind.

A hurricane (tropical storm) is a violent cyclonic windstorm produced by circulating air over warm tropical waters. Individual thunderstorms create updrafts that drive the storm, and a system can persist and grow stronger over several days or weeks. They are weakened when they take in cooler or drier air, or when high-altitude winds shear off the tops of the clouds.

The salient features are:

  • rotation that is counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere, and movement generally to the west and north in tropical latitudes; this creates the characteristic fattened "S" shape of the storms
  • a center of circulation or eye where the wind speeds are calm but the air pressure much lower than the air masses around the hurricane
  • a "storm surge" of higher sea levels due to the decreased pressure within the center
  • gale or hurricane force winds, generally stronger along the right forward, (normally NE) quadrant of the storm
  • heavy rains produced by individual "feeder bands" as the heat energy from the water surface is drawn in as convection
  • tornadoes at the intersection of feeder bands with the coast, and for some distance inland at landfall
