Nutrients are chemical substances obtained from foods during digestion. They are needed to build and maintain body cells, regulate body processes, and supply energy. Digestion is the breakdown of food in the body. Different parts of the body are involved in this process. The nose smells food which causes the mouth to secrete saliva. The saliva contains a special chemical called amylase which begins the breakdown of food. The sight of food also stimulates the production of saliva. The teeth grind the food. The esophagus carries the food to the stomach. The esophagus is so strong that it can push food to the stomach, even if you are standing on your head! The stomach produces more acid to break down the food. The food then enters the intestines, where nutrients enter the bloodstream. (An example of this is to fill a small paper bag with water. Even though you cannot see the water, the bag still gets wet and goes through the sack.) The "leftovers" are then eliminated from the body as unused waste.
Nutrients are substances that are absorbed by the body through the process of digestion.

The new substances formed during a chemical reaction are called Products.
A single chemical that breaks down into other substances during chemical reactions is "decomposing".
The initial substances in a chemical reaction are called reactants.
