Civil trials generally take place to seek justice for events and actions that are not related to crime and where the results are based on compensation or restitution.
Criminal trials are usually carried out to establish the guilt of a person accused of a crime with the intention of punishing the guilty party.
Although there are many similarities, one of the major differences is that of the burden of proof. A civil trial is usually decided on a preponderance of evidence, that is, the balance of evidence in favor of one side or the other. In a criminal trial, the burden of proof is much tougher, usually where there is no reasonable doubt of the guilt of the accused. As the consequences of a criminal conviction can be far more severe than most civil cases, it is right that an accuser has to offer far more solid evidence in a criminal proceeding.
