Rock and roll typically uses a limited set of chords, primarily focusing on three major chords: the I, IV, and V. These chords create the foundation for many classic rock songs, often in a 12-bar blues progression. While variations exist and more complex songs may incorporate additional chords, the simplicity of these three chords is a hallmark of the genre.

Rock and roll can have a variety of instruments, many with an electronic guitar fronting to add the "edge" that forms rock and roll, and a hard beat. Electric guitar, drums, bass guitar are usually what you see, but you can add in piano, and even bagpipes if you want.
There were no rock 'n' roll songs in the 1940s. The birth of rock 'n' roll music happened in the mid-1950s. Rock 'n Roll is held to have been born when Rock Around the Clock became the national #1 in June of 1955. But there was plenty of Proto-Rock in the Late Forties. Check out Wynonie Harris, he was probably the best of the bunch. And the Proto-Rock of the early Fifties, like Jackie Branston, The Crows, and The Chords, is quite good, and well worth a listen.

Start slowly and gradually increase speed as you become more comfortable. Focus on maintaining a smooth and connected sound throughout the roll.
