There are various types of solvents to dry clean clothes: perchlorethylene (perc) is a high percentage use in dry cleaning, and hydrocarbon , Greenearth, Rynex, carbon dioxide, a few others new to the industry and water (wet cleaning).

The dry cleaning industry used gasoline and kerosene for cleaning garments when dry cleaning was fairly new. Dry cleaners then moved on to use trichlorethylene and carbon tetrachloride. Now most dry cleaners use a solvent called perchlorethylene.

One of the most common solvents in the USA is Perchloroethyline, a petroleum-based solvent. A more modern (and possibly more Earth-friendly) one is Hydrogen.
