a GOOD Horror film will be full of suspense, whilst watching it you should have sweaty palms because you are constantly ready for something to pop out and scare you, it doesnt always have to contain any gore at all, horror films are really what you make of them, but generally they will be... well... scary.
I think fear most of the time is related to what is unknown or unimaginable to us, so a characteristic of this kind of movies should be making us doubt, just by planting the tiny seed of doubt by thhinking if that could happen to us or maybe it happened somewhere already and could it happen again?. In a way that explains why the phrase "based on a true story" creep us out more than a common horror sci-fi movie.
Most horror films follow a set of conventions consistent through out the genre, however many chose to bypass these.
- Dark/shadowy lighting
-Isolated location
-Female victim
-Disruption of normality
-Sub plot of male/female relationship
-Defeat of monster
First off there are many rules that apply to horror films. As we all know not all characters in horror movies follow them closely enough which is why their killed so easily. The number one most important rule is... don't trip while the bad guy is chasing you. He's most likely carrying a heavy weapon and what are you carrying? Nothing. So who should outrun who? You. (Unless of course he's got inhuman speed then there's no hope) Next, don't walk into a room without a light, working cell phone reception or for God's sake don't go investigate a disturbance in the dark or alone. Also, while running from the bad guy always have a clumsy dumb friend. If he trips giving his life up for you hope he isn't mad about it. Because in the end he may come back and haunt you, just when you thought it was over. (< movie idea??) Next, please do not have sex. Sexually active people are picked off first. I would like to think this is so their not having sex every other scene and the MPAA will go easy on the director and let the movie be theatrically released. +) Hiding.. Under the bed.. Will result in your ultimate demise.. Idiot. And also do not put your ear near the wall or door to see if the bad guy is on the other side... he will probably slice through the wall making your ear.. No longer yours. If there's a epidemic or sudden outbreak.. lock yourself in the most secluded place and don't let anyone in I repeat ANYONE!! (To the dummies on Antisocial; You shoulda stayed in the cellar the whole movie or just killed yourselves.)
Well that's all I have so far.. hope I was of help! J
Good guys ( or the Law) always triumph in crime themes. ( there are some exceptions to this- but they usually involve non-violent crimes such as art theft and forgery in the Thomas Crown Affair ( part II with Deneuve). The title does not refer to Crown jewelry- it is the name of the lead character a bored millionaire businessman.- Okay- the basic conventions are certain themes ( by censorship policy are out- the death of a child if a lead character or even peripheral- is to be avoided. Kidnapping and child abuse are to be toned down- well basically the standards of the old Comics Code authority of l954 which can be looked up and studied. while there are many exceptions the Hollywood canon ( not a firearm) generally wants a positive ending for at least the Good guy or girl characters in a drama ( as opposed to a Tragedy proper) this is how Hollywood essentially changed the face of drama, previously one had either comedy or tragedy- and no mixing. The Greeks had the Three Relations as a guideline to drama. This was, oddly the original name of the Ronettes- who were all related. Two sisters and a cousin, plus two back-up cousins- Elaine and Diane Talley. Unconfirmed reports... well that"s something else. You asked about Drama. In Television situation comedy- Death in the Family was, for the most part-= an absolute taboo. (Moving) was the usual M.O. to write semi-steady characters out of a script. owing to automobile sponsorship- auto accidents were another taboo except in crime dramas or things like Emergency.
Horror movies exploit fears that are common to almost everyone on the planet in an attempt to gain our support for the main character. By realizing that we might feel the same way in a common situation as is being played on the big screen we connect with the characters.we realize that the fears that we are experiencing during horror movies are caused by a temporary overpowering of our conscious minds over our subconscious minds. The usually suppressed fears are able to be brought to the surface for the short time that we watch a horror movie. They scare us by making us realize that we are afraid of a lot more in life than we would like to admit when the lights come back on. Horror movies are designed to have a certain outcome. They are designed to scare the pants off of us for at least two hours. Sometimes, though, our pants stay off for a much longer period of time. - Vincent Poupard
