like any other sovereign nation over 200 years old Chile has many important events.. here are some recent ones in no particular order...
1- U.S help finance and helped in 1973 coup that lead to 3.000 dead including DEMOCRATICALLY elected president Salvador Allende and many more disappeared and or tortured. ( i think this one still very fresh since the military junta took power for 17 years up until 1989)
2- first woman elected president in Chile and in south america... Michelle Bachelet whos father was one of the 3000 dead during the coup.
3- we have the record for the biggest earthquake in 1979 recorded at over 9.6 in the scales.. to put that in context japans recent one was 7.7 and Haiti was 8.1.. and we also had one in 2010 that was recorded at 8.3
4-2010 33 miners got trapped underground for i believe a period of 70 days.. they were all rescued safely..
hope that helps..
