Protein deficiency is called Kwashiorkor, and the word means 'the rejected child'. That refers to a child who is no longer getting breast milk because another child has been born.

It is easy to spot because the hair of a dark haired child starts looking red. This is because the colour in the hair is made by a protein called melatonin and when the body is desperate for protein, it draws it from anywhere it can and so it takes it from the hair colour.

Protein is the only substance that can build new body tissue and repair damaged body tissue, so a child with a protein deficiency cannot grow or heal. By the time the hair is starting to look red, there is already major damage to other body systems and even if there is successful treatment, the child will never be the same.
