"Gnomeo and Juliet" is an animated film that adapts Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" with garden gnomes as the main characters. The main difference is the setting and characters used in the adaptation, as well as the overall tone of the film, which is geared towards children with a more lighthearted and comedic approach.

A play is a blueprint. A director and some actors, and probably an extensive production crew, have to take that blueprint and make a performance of it. Uncounted tens of thousands of performances have been made from Shakespeare's play.

For a movie (such as Baz Luhrman's 1996 movie Romeo + Juliet) a screenplay has to be made, from which the movie is made. A screenplay is a lot like a play--it's also a blueprint--but screenplays never get filmed more than once. That is because the film is a permanently recorded performance which can be seen again and again. Live theatre, on the other hand, rarely gets recorded, so it makes more sense to reuse plays.

Luhrman did not use the play as his screenplay because the dynamics of film are different from those of theatre. Film relies a lot more on images than on words. This film, in particular, relied on film gimmicks: slow motion, stop action, overcranking, superimposed titles, crosscutting, fast zooms and so on.

I recommend that you get hold of the CBC video of a live performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Stratford Festival in 1993 starring Megan Porter Follows and Antoni Cimolino and compare it to the 1996 film.

There have been several movies made from the play. Off the top of my head I can think of no less than 3 movies. To answer correctly the movie would have to be given. The best way to do that would be by year or director.

It entirely depends on which movie you are talking about. Your teacher probably loves to show movie versions of things and ask the students to explain the difference between the movie and the book. Many teachers do. But the question here is different, because usually your teacher is comparing a film to a novel. But Romeo and Juliet is not a novel. It is a play. It doesn't become real until someone acts it out. Therefore you can't say things like "Mercutio in the book didn't wear that kind of costume" because the play says nothing about what kind of costume he did wear. It is up to the director to decide. What the script does tell you is what words the characters are supposed to say. The writer of the screenplay may have deleted certain lines, changed certain words, and in extreme cases removed scenes and characters altogether. (The second act prologue is frequently omitted from film versions of the play). In a certain film version of the play you will find that the writer of the screenplay added scenes with dialogue he had written himself. These are the kind of differences which you must focus on.
