For a chronological relational list showing 100's of the major names in UNIX see Unix History * In 1991 with the release of SunOS 5, Sun renamed their product Solaris 2 and later releases were versioned 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, etc. Sun again changed the way they versioned their product after 2.6 by dropping the 2 and simply using Solaris 6, Solaris 7, until the current release of Solaris 10. * Solaris was originally a proprietary product and operated strictly on SPARC platforms while Linux operates on x86 platforms. Solaris now supports x86 platforms in addition to SPARC. Solaris also boasts full Linux compatibility Sun.com. * Solaris UNIX is trademarked by The Open Group and Linux is not.
