A Junior college (more often called a Community College these days), offers 2-year programs leading to an Associates Degree, as well as shorter certificate programs. Admission to a Community College is usually easier than to a University. The primary function of faculty in Community Colleges is to teach.

A University offers 4-year programs leading to Bachelors Degrees and also has schools and colleges that offer 1-, 2-, 3- year and longer programs leading to Masters and Doctoral degrees. Universities are more likely to have many faculty who spend most of their time engaged in research, usually funded by outside sources, and who teach one course or do not teach at all.
