Pre-paid phone cards and long distance phone cards have several differences. Pre-paid cards are purchased for a set fee for a certain amount of time. The caller dials the toll-free number on the card and uses a PIN to create an account; the company keeps track of the time used and deducts it from what was already purchased. With a long distance calling card, the caller again uses a toll-free number and a PIN, but is charged for the calls later on a bill.
