1st generation colts deals with the early model, 1870's up to about 1940's. second generation deals with time from about 1950's to about 1960's. 3d generalion deals with all colt from 1960's on. My dates may not be correct, but you see the time frame has to deal with 1,2,and3d generation colts......................... I do not have information concerning the applicable dates which distinguish the generations of Colt SSA's, but am advised that the Colt factory was totally destroyed in a fire in the 1960's resulting in a total loss of all machinery. The new machinery used metric threads for the barrels. This is referred to as the 3rd generation. The 1st and 2nd generation SSA's use non-metric threads. The 1st and 2nd generation parts are interchangeable but not the 3rd generation. (by Arn Fire)

In addition, the first generation had the so-called "black powder frame", which had the cylinder pin retaining screw coming into the frame at the front, up at about a 45 degree angle. The second generation "smokeless powder frame" had the cylinder pin retaining screw coming into the frame from the left side at 90 degrees to the frame.
