- Class A: Fires caused by combustible materials used as a fuel source such as debris, paper, trash and wood.
- Class B: Fires caused by liquids such as gas.
- Class C: Fires caused by electrical components and sources such as electrical outlet shorting.
- Class D: Fires caused by metals such as magnesium.
Each of the four classes require specialized firefighting techniques and extinguishing. If buying a fire extinguisher, be sure to look for its class rating in relation to fire hazards in your home, office or other location.
