You don't really say what you mean by "olden days" so I'm going to guess you're referring to the eras before modern technology. In the days before electricity or telegraphs, there were a variety of ways to get information:
primary and secondary sources
primary consists of newspapers,diaries,maps,archeological sites,monuments,etc.
secondary sources contains newspapers, biographies, magazines and movies etc.
I would go to the Medieval Sourcebook, which is a project at Fordham University, for source material. There is a link below. There is a large amount of source material, and since the Middle Ages lasted a thousand years and represents many cultures across a continent, there are too many source authors or texts to list without having the parameters narrowed.
The reason why some periods are known as "dark" is because they are the ones without large amounts of source material. Even so, the Dark Ages in the West, which is said to have lasted from 476 to 1000 AD, has a fair amount of documentation. English history is covered to a degree by the writings of Bede and Nennius. But there s a problem with both these sources and historians who use them.
Part of the problem is that no one really believes them. They appear to disagree with the archaeological record to some extent, and they often disagree with each other. They place different things at different times, or one will say something is important that the other ignores altogether.
Another part of the problem is that people historically have cited them as original sources without using the material in them or even appearing to have read it. For example Bede makes a series of statements about the history of the Celtic Church, which he considered as a rival to the Church of Rome. The statements are acknowledgements that are not politically motivated, because they would tend to reinforce the position of the rival. Nevertheless, these statements are not used because they disagree with current teachings of history.
The time when Bede's history was put out of fashion is known, but as far as I know the reasons why this was done are not recorded. It is known that the people who changed history had political reasons to do so. My conclusion is that there is a good chance history was rewritten for political purposes. And the bottom line here is that you should believe neither the original sources nor the current histories without checking the facts for yourself.
there are two ways for medieval information archeological and litrerary archeological contains coins tools etc.literary source contains biographies, autobiographiesetc
what are sieges designs
In the medieval ages coins were made from either gold, silver or bronze. But none of them were alloys
There are two types of lances: heavy and light. heavy: 9 to 14 feet. light: 5 to 9 feet. Sometimes shorter.
The settlers were ones who were trying to find new locations due to different crops and available sources being available in different colonies.
Blacksmiths, later on, gunsmiths.
Using different types of sources you can have a close guess to what medival villages looked like. For example, aerial photography, written sources(E.G.diaries), illustrations, and etc. All these types of sources, but as a historian, you will need to use a few, but different types of sources to confirm!!
Well.. There's ketchup, mustard, HP sauce and errr BBQ sauce
The two different sources are primary and secondary sources
Primary sources are firsthand accounts of events or original documents from a specific time period, while secondary sources interpret and analyze primary sources. Both types of sources provide valuable information about history, but primary sources offer a direct perspective from the time period being studied, whereas secondary sources offer analysis and context.
