Generally speaking, a notebook computer must receive power one of three ways.
1) A power adapter (the cord between your laptop and your wall)
2) The onboard battery
3) A "docking station", some older laptops came with a full blown dock that you could set the entire laptop into and leave it there to charge! The overall apparatus weighed upwards of 20 pounds!
In some cases, notebooks also support auxiliary USB charging devices (ZAGG Power Pack). These models are however almost entirely limited to higher and ASUS computers.
In the near future, with the release of windows 8 on the 26th of October, we will be seeing many touchscreen devices hit the shelves with windows onboard. Although most of these will be "hybrid devices" (tablet/notebook crossbreed), some will support NFC (Near Field Contact) charging allowing the user to simply place it on a stand and have it charge through it's dock wirelessly!
