What are the differentials?

The differentials are the gears in the back of the rear end that are connected to the axels. They are able to be changed out with different ratio's for different tasks. You would want a taller (larger) gear for drag racing or rock climbing. You would want a smaller ratio gear for slower acceleration but better fuel economy. Cars usually come from the factory with between a 3.23- a 3.73 ratio. Some newer performance cars have a 4.11 for increased acceleration but with a lower mpg(miles per gallon).
