The esophagus itself isn't considered to have any digestive role. It's only function is to convey a bolus of food from the pharynx to the stomach. The stomach has both mechanical and chemical digestive functions. Mechanically, the stomach churns and pummels the food you swallow aiding in breaking it down. Chemically, the stomach produces HCl acid which acts on all nutrients and pepsin which specifically breaks down proteins into smaller chains called peptides.
