That all depends on what crop your working with,if its an orchard then I don't see any down falls as long as you have sprinklers set up under ground ,but if you have to carry all them pipes and lock them together in the orchard, then that would be a down fall,or you ran out of water from your water supply,or broken or clogged sprinklers would have to be a down fall, but flooding it with out sprinklers would be a down fall for sure.

Some disadvantages of sprinkler irrigation include the potential for water wastage due to evaporation and wind drift, uneven distribution of water leading to over- or under-irrigation in certain areas, and higher energy costs associated with pumping water. Additionally, sprinkler systems can be susceptible to clogging if not properly maintained, and certain crops may not be suitable for sprinkler irrigation due to sensitivity to wet leaves or foliage diseases.

Why does the sprinkler turn only when the water is on and turns in the direction opposite that of the water?

Newton's third law of motion. The turning of the sprinkler head is the equal and opposite reaction to the water leaving the sprinkler nozzles. The water goes out and the sprinkler nozzle is pushed backward, turning it in a circle because the arm is attached to the middle of the sprinkler. The higher the water flow, the faster the sprinkler spins.
