The first problem is getting it up the mountain. For Mount Hamilton near San Jose, it took nearly a year to carve the road out of the forest and drag the Lick Observatory telescope components up the mountain - using horses.

The second problem can be light pollution; if your mountain is near a city, the glare of the city lights can make the sky so bright that it's difficult to see the stars.

Third was that in pre-computer days, the astronomer was limited to living at the top of a cold mountain, far away from civilization or his university, huddled up in coats and blankets and peering through the telescope eyepiece.
