Uses up small pieces of wood, as you'll see with oriented strand board which is basically wood chips glued together. Can be engineered for specific attributes, like plywood is very strong in multiple directions, medium-density fiberboard is very heavy (that's important when you're making speaker cabinets out of it--cheap weight is good there), and melamine is water resistant. Many manufactured wood products use large amounts of recycled timber, like particleboard which is made entirely from recycled timber.
