Marcus Aurelius, despite being a revered Stoic philosopher and Roman emperor, had several weaknesses. He struggled with feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt, often questioning his effectiveness as a leader. His deep sense of duty sometimes led to overwork and neglect of personal relationships, particularly with his family. Additionally, his philosophical ideals sometimes clashed with the harsh realities of governance, leading to challenges in implementing his vision for a just and virtuous society.
Maximus refers to the emperor Marcus Aurelius as "Caesar" because it is a title traditionally used to denote a Roman emperor or leader. In the context of "Gladiator," this reference underscores the respect and loyalty Maximus feels towards Aurelius, whom he views as a just and noble ruler. The use of "Caesar" also highlights the political and historical significance of the emperor's role in the Roman Empire.
He is responsible for the martyrdom of the first apologist, Justin, and some people belive he is also responsible for the death of Polycarp.
Yes, Marcus Aurelius served in the military during his reign as Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD. He participated in several campaigns, particularly against Germanic tribes along the Danube River. His experiences as a military leader influenced his philosophical writings, particularly in his work Meditations, where he reflected on duty, resilience, and the nature of leadership.

Marcus Aurelius was a successful emperor. His generals won a war with Persia (161-166). He fought the Marcomannic War (166-173) against Germanic peoples who had crossed the river Danube. During that campaign he fell ill and there were rumours that he had died. A rebellion broke out in most of the eastern part of the empire. However, when he became clear that he was not dead, the rebellion ended and the leader of the rebellion was killed by the troops. During a further military campaign in the north (174-180) he fell ill again and died.

An equestrian statue, or a statue of a rider mounted on a horse, were used to emphasize a military leader's or statesmen's leadership roles. They were particularly used in ancient Rome. One of the few Roman equestrian statues that was not melted down is the Statue of Marcus Aurelius.
